THE RESTORED FILM OF 'SOUTH'

South, Frank Hurley's celebrated film record of Shackleton's 1914-16 Endurance expedition, is a unique historical document and supplies the viewer with an extraordinary newsreel sensation : you genuinely believe you were there.

The UK's National Film and Television Archive has ingeniously reconstructed and restored Hurley's footage using a wide range of materials.

A CHOICE OF ANTARCTIC-RELATED VIDEOS

A number of interesting videos can be found at the Franheim Site, named after the flat bottomed boat used by first Nansen in the Arctic and later Amundsen in the Antarctic.

FOLLOWING SHACKLETON'S ROUTE

A new 50 minute video has been produced by Rand Shackleton and Fathom Expeditions which follows the route of Shackleton and the Endurance crew as they sought to escape disaster early in 1916.

In 2003 Fathom Expeditions traced 'The Greatest Survival Story of All Time' with their own replica of the James Caird, landing at Cape Wild on Elephant Island and at Cape Cove, Shackleton's landing pont on South Georgia. The expedition gave them many insights into the experiences of Shackleton and his Endurance comrades.

GREAT ADVENTURERS : SHACKLETON

Great Adventurers - Ernest Shackleton : to the End of the Earth

90 DEGREES SOUTH

Photographed and narrated by Herbert Ponting, © 1933.According to www.framheim.com it is 'an utterly eerie movie put together by the British Film Institute's National Film Archive. It includes footage of the polar party demonstrating how they would be living whilst on the march for the pole."

THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH

A seven-part mini-series first shown on Masterpiece Theatre in 1985. Based on the book by Roland Huntford (originally published as Scott and Amundsen), it chronicles the 1910-1912 race for the South Pole between Scott and Amundsen.

The Norwegian parts are played by actual Norwegians (and one Swedish national). Amundsen is played by Sverre Anker Ousdal, while the remaining crew were members of Norway's National Theatre. There are several British cast members include some first class talent. 'It's nice,' says one criticism, 'to see a production where quality and accuracy is so highly regarded.'
