'ZAZ' HEADS SOUTH: THE PRESIDENT'S JOURNEY TO CHILE TO HONOUR TWO BRAVE MEN

Shackleton’s granddaughter, the Hon. Alexandra Shackleton, has attended many events both at home and abroad as the representative of her grandfather's family and also representing the Society of which she is President. One of her most illustrious trips in recent years was as the honoured guest of the Chilean Navy.

On the occasion of the official celebration of the 485th anniversary of the discovery of the Strait of Magellan, Hon. Alexandra Shackleton and the grandsons of Pilot Luis Pardo Villalon were official guests at the celebration in Chile’s southernmost town, Puerto Williams. To mark the event a civil-military ceremony took place in front of the monument fashioned from the prow of the ‘Escampivo Yelcho’, which Commander Pardo commanded on the rescue mission which succeeded in bringing 22of Shackleton’s men home alive and well from Elephant Island on 30 August 1916.

Pilot Pardo’s grandsons, Jaime and Fernando Pardo Huerta, expressed their intense emotion at visiting the memorial to their grandfather’s ship, recalling his devotion to his naval and Antarctic duties, and both welcomed the chance to meet Shackleton’ granddaughter, remembering that as boys they had met her father, Edward, Lord Shackleton, on his visit to Chile back in 1964. Prior to the ceremony, all three paid a visit to the naval commander of the Beagle district, in which Puerto Williams lies.

The Chilean naval authorities were delighted to welcome Shackleton's granddaughter as their guest, not least as a token of the close relations that have traditionally existed betweeen the two countries, and of the esteem in which they hold each other. We are especially grateful to the Chilean Navy for making this record of the visit possible.
