FOLLOWING SHACKLETON, WORSLEY AND CREAN OVER THE SOUTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS
Already acclaimed for its icy adventures in Greenland, the Antarctic Peninsula, Chile, The Beagle Channel, Cape Horn and the Falklands, Skip Novak's enterprising company Pelagic Expeditions now organises and leads mountain crossings for groups and individuals, following the hazardous route Shackleton and his two companions made over the then uncharted mountains of South Georgia in mid 1916. (The first crossing after Shackleton was made in the 1960s by a British Services party of which the Society's second Chairman, Patrick Fagan was a member).
Their website reports "The boat Pelagic Australis returned from South Georgia after a successful Shackleton Traverse on our Metolius Expedition. While there it met up with the original boat Pelagic, which was engaged on a 40 day film expedition for Norwegian television which included South Georgia, a successful landing on Elephant Island and diving with leopard seals on the Peninsula."
The most recent expedition to South Georgia, in November 2006, was featured by CNN's Mainsail programme during Sat Jan 20th to Mon Jan 22nd 2007, in a 4 minute feature.
