"THE BOSS": A VERSION OF THE SHACKLETON STORY FOR CHILDREN

Michael Smith, whose well-researched biography of Shackleton's companion and a key member of the James Caird group Tom Crean was a popular best seller, has also written a version of the Shackleton story for children.

'Shackleton - the Boss', the book by Michael Smith
Shackleton - the Boss' (or just 'The Boss', as Shackleton's men used to call him|) covers all the main expeditions of Shackleton's exploring career - the Discovery (1901-4, with Captain Scott), the Nimrod, the Endurance and the Quest, as well as bringing alive several other aspects of Sir Ernest Shackleton's youth, life and times.

Read about the book at Ireland's Collins Press

The book comes with some memorable illustrations of Shackleton's career and his many daring and perilous adventures from Annie Brady.

Two other Polar books written for children have proved rather a success. One is Ice Trap! by Meredith Hooper, splendidly illustrated by Mark Robertson; and another - although relating to his participation not in Shackleton's Endurance but in Scott's Terra Nova expedition a few years earlier - is called Tom Crean's Rabbit: a creature clearly designed to enter literary saga on a par with the Endurance's ship's cat, Mrs. Chippy. The book is again by Meredith Hooper, beautifully illustrated by Bert Kitchen.

Meredith Hooper is also the writer of several other Antarctic children's books, including Ponko the Penguin and Antarctic Journal: The Hidden Worlds of Antarctica's Animals_, illustrated by Lucia Deleiris.
