PLANNED SEARCH FOR THE WRECK OF 'ENDURANCE'

The "Search for Endurance" expedition continues to gain support. David L. Mearns, leader of the proposed expedition to search for the wreck of Endurance and a member of The James Caird Society, is pleased to announce that H.R.H. The Princess Royal has agreed to become Patron of the Expedition. The expedition has been approved, also, by the National Geographic Society (U.S.) and is also registered with the Royal Geographical Society (U.K.)

David is a world expert in exploring the deep sea ocean. With Rob White he was behind the Channel Four/ITN-backed exhibition to find the World War II battle cruiser HMS Hood and the legendary German battleship Bismarck. He was also responsible for finding and filming the Derbyshire in 1994. This bulk carrier went down in suspicious circumstances and David's findings at the site paved the way for a full government inquiry.

His past successes also include the Lucona - a ship deliberately sunk for insurance fraud and now the subject of a movie - and the John Barry - a liberty ship sunk by U-boats during the war. The latter was on its way to Saudi Arabia when it went down and contained hundreds of silver riyals.

The hunt for Endurance is presently scheduled for February/March 2006 when the ice pack is at its lowest concentration. A very good sinking position has been identified. The search will be conducted using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

Scientists from BAS and US universities will join the expedition to conduct a series of scientific investigations. These should increase our knowledge and understanding of this unique environment.

David Mearns, Director of Blue Water Recoveries Ltd, has invited members who are interested in any aspect of the expedition to contact him on david@bluewater.uk.com
